This is Michelle, Hayley's mom.
Why does my nine year old have a blog for her video game play you might be asking right now?
When I was young, my parents gave me a typewriter and I would retype my own version of the sports page. Eventually, I got a computer at 11. I find it no coincidence that I work in developing sports sites with a media background.
Want to enrich your child's learning – find what interests them at the moment and work inside that framework. I try hard to make learning creative and fun. I think you can find something to benefit educationally in almost anything – the more offbeat the better to me. At nine, this is a great age to let her expand into all sorts of things.
This is also different time and age than any of us grew up in and it is imperative that children learn to integrate technology into their life in useful ways. Computer and internet skills will benefit our child no matter what she wants to be (unless it is a Luddite of course!).
I'm a web developer and this is just another way I'm trying to help Hayley learn. Like how we use webkinz itself, I try to find ways for Hayley to have fun AND gain skills. I try to steer her towards the more educational or logic based game play in webkinz. She's learned some about money and math comparing W Shop and Curio Shop prices. We've worked on excel with a spreadsheet for tracking her gems.
And a blog is our latest effort on that path. She can keep track of stuff to help her game play and remember cool things (like her cherry jackpot) while working on typing and spelling. She's learning how to fill in blanks and use a templated system to post info on the web. She's learning how to ftp to our server and post the image online, not to mention how to use photoshop in a very basic way.
Don't get me wrong, I don't keep my kid inside all day on the computer. She isn't allowed to do that anyway. She's a constant motion – she plays challenge level soccer and horseback rides. She was on a swim team this summer and took tennis and golf lessons. Honestly after about 30-40 minutes on webkinz, she's ready to go outside in play. Everything in moderation …
Maybe she'll get bored and we'll dump this. But maybe it'll spur her interest to write more or design video games, or be an internet pundit – but overall I hope I'm helping her be creative and plant those seeds. Who knows, maybe it is just a goofy way to have fun with my kid. I like it here, it is fun for me because of all of the neat kids and parents I've gotten to interact with on here.

My kids are making me write this email… And I have found it useful, for about 8 months now, they have changed a lot… Usually they would be outside playing, now they are on the computer… I set a limit first for around 2 hours… My wife and I caught them one night playing a game, that helps a lot, Quizzy corner.

It is a really fine line as parents that we have to walk with this game. I try to balance her time with Quizzy’s and the Word Challenge game, and we work on budgets, etc. Plus this is how I’m teaching her technical skills and getting her write more. As you all know I’m sure, you have to do what it takes to get through to your kids. She also has to earn or buy all her webkinz.
She plays so many sports, this works as a nice downtime activity.

Your blog is wonderful. I haven’t made the complete tour yet, but really appreciate the great information and the comments so bountiful. I’m the Webkinz grama in our family with four granddaughters and two grandsons enjoying their own Webkinz pets and learning so many new things – including how to read!
I got involved when one of the granddaughters received her first, a cocker spaniel, from the lady who it turns out will become her new grandma this month. Rachel is that granddaughter. Her mom was a full time student trying to finish her music degree and I helped Rachel get her pet registered, and then helped her get started keeping up with it. Didn’t take long for me to get hooked.
My favorite 2 games are Tile Towers and Goobers Lab. I’m just wondering – is there any technique or “trick” to reaching those humongus scores I see on high scores all the time. I’ve gotten to level 15 only once on Goobers Lab, but with Tile Towers, I have never gotten past level 7 and that too was only once. Help from anyone would be appreciated.

I just found out about webkinz about 2 months ago, I bought each of my kids one,(ages 7,10,12,13 oh and my nephew who is 5) and now I’m addicted with my own account. The kids and I have so much fun with it! I just came across this blog, and I think its wonderful, and has been very helpful! Thanks so much!
We are having so many problems with the webkinz site. Today it says we already did gem hunts and wheel of wow on all 3 of our accounts. I had the same gem problem you do with the second not being given…

I went on Webkinz this morning before school & before I had 8495 KinzCash, but when I went on I only had 3 KinzCash!!!
Then I went to get some food from my dock because my pet, Sasha, was hungry. I had 54 items in my dock before but then I had—- None! 
I got money by doing “Daily KinzCare” or whatever it’s called & I bought food after that & when I went to make Aquarius Jelly in my house- both of my pets were in my Garden & my room was empty!!!! 
I went to all my rooms & they were empty, too! NOBODY knew my password, so I was wondering if it was something wrong with Webkinz.
